LNB Round 5 (Regular Season): Leones edge Caneros by three points

The most exciting game of round 5 in the LNB took place in La Romana. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 5th ranked Caneros (4-5) to eighth ranked Leones (2-6) 87-84 on Thursday evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Leones made 7 blocks. The game was dominated by American players. The best player for the winners was power forward Kerry Richardson (202-1999, college: Morehouse) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 14 rebounds. Guard Reggie Quezada (190, college: USAO) chipped in 16 points, 8 assists and 5 steals. Center Corey Boyd (206-1998) produced a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds for the hosts. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Leones maintains eighth place with 2-6 record. Caneros at the other side dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Leones will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Caneros will play again on the road against Leones (#8) in Santo Domingo and are hoping to win this game.
Leader Indios delivered the seventh victory. This time they beat 8th ranked Leones (2-6) 87-81 in San Francisco. Luismal Ferreiras (200-2003) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists. Kingsley Fitzgerald contributed with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Naturalized American Angel Gerardo Suero (196-1989, college: Albany) answered with 30 points for Leones. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Indios (7-1) have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They maintain first place, which they share with Metros. Leones at the other side keep the eighth position with six games lost. Indios will play against Heroes (#7) in Moca in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Leones will play at home against Caneros and hope to get back on the winning track.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Puerto Plata. Local Marineros (3-4) outscored 9th ranked Soles (1-6) 94-75 on Thursday night. Andersson Mejia stepped up with a triple-double by scoring 14 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists for the winners. Terry Larrier responded with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Despite that victory Marineros went down to fifth position due to points difference, which they share with Titanes and Heroes. Soles lost their fourth game in a row. They stay at the bottom place with six games lost. Marineros will meet Titanes (#5) in the next round. Soles will play against the league's second-placed Metros (#2) and hope to win that game.

In the last game of round 5 bottom-ranked Soles were defeated by Caneros in La Romana 96-88.



Caneros - Soles 96-88

There was no surprise in La Romana where 9th ranked Soles (1-6) were defeated by fifth ranked Caneros (4-5) 96-88 on Tuesday. Caneros made 17-of-20 free shots (85.0 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. Serbian forward Lazar Lugic (208-1998, agency: Dagger Basket) stepped up and scored 22 points and 5 rebounds for the winners and Eusebio Suero chipped in 15 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. American forward Terry Larrier (203-1995, college: UConn) responded with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and swingman Jonathan Bello (195-2001) scored 18 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Caneros moved-up to fourth place. Soles lost their fourth game in a row. They stay at the bottom position with six games lost. Caneros will meet Leones (#8) in the next round. Soles will play against the league's second-placed Metros and hope to win that game.

Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 26 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Leones' players. Indios brought some defensive toughness making 9 blocks. Kittitian forward Kingsley Fitzgerald (188-1986) contributed with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Four Indios players scored in double figures.
